Whether you’re a designer, engineer, or any kind of creative pro who deals with visual or functional material, your process is a vital part of your profession. This section of the website serves to illuminate the process, studies, and overall consideration to detail and market use that DesignDesign gives to all projects.

Visit this section regularly, as we will be adding more projects to this page soon.

DATACOLOR PRINTFIX PRO

DesignDesign was engaged by Datacolor to help bring to market their exciting next generation spectro technology, in the form of the PrintFIX Pro, a hand-held device used by photographers to produce gallery-quality prints. The PrintFIX Pro profiles any RGB-driven inkjet, dye-sub, thermal, chemical, or laser printer with virtually any media.

The new design needed to be ergonomic and intuitive, with product styling that reflected Datacolor’s new global style guidelines.

DesignDesign began the process by conducting user research, as well as ergonomic and anthropomorphic studies before commencing the concept ideation. 2D sketches explored many forms and part assembly methods. 3D foam models were created to help visually resolve the true size and feel of form concepts. These foam models proved to be valuable for user/customer review and buy-in.

Sketches: Pencil and marker sketches are created during brainstorming sessions to quickly explore form and details of concepts, including part assembly and color break up.

Models: These “3D” sketches allow customers to truly “feel” the forms shown in the 2D sketches, reflecting actual size of component assemblies.

SLA: Stereolithography (SLA) models were used to verify CAD files and component fit in part assemblies.

PrintFIX Pro’s final form semantically guides a user’s grasping of the device, nesting within the hand for proper positioning. The form allows for easy left/right hand use with a centrally located trigger button on top. While a user holds the device, a simple twist of the wrist exposes the LCD display and 2 control buttons underneath.

Following the selection of a form, Solidworks CAD modeling (shown above) was begun to fully develop the multiple parts of the assembly, to address part design for assembly and manufacturing process requirements. SLA models were then made to test part assembly and component fit before documentation was released for final production.
